“Dali Meets Rockwell”. In a style best described as Contemporary Narrative Realism, my paintings tell stories about the human condition and its relationship with both Creator and creation. Blending highly rendered representational content with stylistic abstraction, my art, both literally and figuratively, is an amalgum of both flesh and spirit. My recent work includes tactile and even deconstructivist elements, which interestingly enough, is also reflected in the funky mixed media pieces of painted imagery on wood and other found objects which I like to work on between paintings. My artwork seeks to define in the painted image and the repurposed object the connection between humanity and divinity, along with the redemptive work of the Divine Creator in and through me. TRANSFORMATION. My figurative subjects—often children because of their natural innocence and purity—are juxtaposed in strangely ethereal environments, and I delight in finding new purpose in old, mundane, or cast aside icons in the creation of something new and deep and meaningful and cool. Of course, the influence of my career as a graphic designer is manifest in the intentionality with which I approach content choices and composition. On the other hand, there is also a palpable antipathy toward the technology and crass hedonism inherent in the profession, which is why I left it. My soul is just better off with a paintbrush in my hand than a mouse, and a child in my heart than a dollar figure. Go figure.
Lawrence Jolly is a painter and mixed media artist who lives and works in Austin, Texas (USA). He attended the University of Texas/Austin and graduated in 1981 with a BFA in Graphic Design. In 1985 he founded Jolly Design, a graphic design and branding company, which became one of the top creative firms in Austin, earning numerous local and national awards. After over 25 years in this business, Lawrence parlayed his deep experience in the commercial arts with a lifelong yearning to create fine art, and so began training with American artist Thomas Darnell in France, and English artist Edward Povey, among others. In a relatively short period of time, he has developed a style and body of work unique to his own creative persona, and has exhibited in numerous shows and galleries, including several one man shows. In 2015, his piece “Sedona Lake” was voted the 2015 People’s Choice Award winner of the annual City of Austin Peoples Gallery exhibit, and was purchased by the City for its permanent collection. In 2016, his piece “Exitus” was one of 10 works chosen to appear on highway billboards through the Reagan Advertising Artboards competition. He is married, with three grown children, three beautiful grandchildren, and one amazing Golden Retriever.
“Jolly is making an increasing contribution. He brings a fine and also modest realism to painting, in which you can sense him behind the canvas, like the humble artisan. But in his case with a difference: he is a born symbolist, and presents layered metaphors about life, family, mortality - and all the issues with which humanity needs their artists to wrestle. We need to watch Jolly, because I for one, sense that he has barely started to fulfill his considerable potential.”
